Hi
this is my first wordpress blog, for my previous blogs checkout http://thescattysewer.blogspot.co.uk
So who am I and whats this blog about?
My name is Julia Jones, i live in Bridgend, South Wales, UK. I have been sewing since May 2013 and I completely love it! Before I took up sewing I was having a pretty rubbish time of it, I struggled with anxiety, but sewing helps me to focus my mind and gives me an outlet for my creativity. I have progressed pretty quickly with my sewing skills, I try to challenge myself to do things that Im scared of, like a regency dress, which would scare most advanced dressmakers, but I just jumped in feet first, my first regency dress (not shown below) was made from a duvet cover and was always intended to be a practice, didn’t want to mess up my pretty fabric. Homemade sewing, especially clothing, is becoming a dying art, but with the introduction of the Great British Sewing Bee TV programme a new wave of homegrown sewers is emerging. Incidentally I hadn’t even heard of the Sewing Bee until after I had already joined a sewing class and missed 1/2 the first series, but am an massive fan now.
I want to spread the message that homemade clothes aren’t complicated to make, don’t look rubbish and most of all don’t cost the earth. My homemade clothes fit me perfectly, because I make them for my dimensions and not some boss in some sweat shop in India’s idea of what a British women size is, I choose the fabric and colour I want, not the fashion buyers of these fashion stores choice and most of all I choose the style I want.
There are so many great Blogs out there that give you fabulous free patterns and tutorials it really is easy and cheap to make great clothes and gifts. I will try to upload all the great tutorials and free stuff I can find, stay tuned. I am also venturing out into making my own patterns (only a little fledgling pattern maker at present) so eventually I hope to offer you a few free designed by JJ patterns.
So if your a beginner, just had a sewing machine for Christmas and hasn’t a clue, drop me a line and Ill help either myself or find some online tutorials for you to view, but in the mean time take a look at all I have achieved in 18 months and what you can achieve in the same time.
